It’s a fact of life that your job is likely to get in the way of your hobbies. Still, most of us try to strike a nice balance between working to make a living and doing what brings us joy. If you’re a truck driver, you might find that it interferes with your hobbies a little more than you’d like. You can’t always catch the game you want to see. You can’t tend to your garden at home. But there are a few hobbies that are perfect for the life of a truck driver.
Working Out
The life of a truck driver doesn’t exactly lend itself to exercise. Still, we have to mention it because it’s so important. Truck driving is by nature a sedentary hobby, so you should make a concerted effort to stay healthy. Diet is half the battle; the rest is exercise.
Bring a couple dumbbells with you if you can and do some exercises at rest stops. Do push-ups and sit-ups. Run laps around your truck if you have to. Who cares if it looks silly? What’s really silly is not taking your health into your own hands.
Photography
One of the perks that comes with the territory of the profession is travel. While the kind of traveling you do when on your route is quite a bit different from the traveling you’d do for fun, you still probably see a lot more of the county than your average person.
What do people do when they travel? They take pictures! Photography is one of the most perfect hobbies for truck drivers. Even if you can’t get to truly out-of-the-way spots like National Parks. But it’s surprising just how much beauty you can find just on the highway-side. Roadside views and close-ups of plants and wildlife can make for some truly interesting photography.
Audiobooks
Most truck drivers like to bring a book or two with them when they’re on the road. But it’s tough to find the time to actually crack that book open. By the time your work is done for the day, you might feel too exhausted to read.
Audiobooks are the solution. These are the modern incarnation of the books on tape you remember from your younger days. And in the era of smartphones, they’re more accessible and abundant than ever. No matter your interests, there’s bound to be some material that suits you.
Podcasts deserve an honorable mention here as well!
Learning Languages
We know—language learning isn’t exactly what you’d think of as a typical hobby. But perhaps more people should. Learning a second language is great for your brain, and it can keep you feeling alert when you’re on the road.
A good language learning regimen should consist of speaking, reading, and writing. Listening to audio in your target language is something that can easily be accomplished when you’re behind the wheel. You should have no difficulty finding an audio-based language learning program in your language of choice.
