If you’re a truck driver, we know you live a work hard play hard lifestyle. One of the most difficult aspects of the profession is just how difficult it is to get a good night’s sleep. In fact, you might simply have given up. But if you don’t sleep at least seven hours, you put yourself at risk of falling victim to highway hypnosis. It might be impossible to sleep as well on your route as you would at home. But here are some sleep tips for truck drivers.
Use a Sleep Mask
Investing in a sleep mask is one of the easiest ways you can improve the quality of your sleep. It’s no secret that bright lights tend to keep people awake. Even if you can sleep through them, chances are that they’re reducing the quality of your sleep.
These days, every trucker has a mask with them due to Covid-19. Why not pick up another sort of mask as well?
Make Use of Earplugs
A sleep mask prevents bright light from interfering with your sleep. Earplugs prevent noise from doing the same. Truck stops tend to be pretty quiet places. But you’re still going to be woken up by other eighteen-wheelers pulling up and the sound of car doors. Earplugs won’t completely block these sounds. But they will make them less of a nuisance.
Use White Noise
You can follow this tip either instead of or in conjunction with our previous one. White noise can do wonders for reducing the impact external noises have on your sleep. Consider investing in a portable white noise machine. Alternatively, there is an abundance of smartphone apps that can do just as good of a job. If you want to go the old-fashioned way, try just using radio static!
While we’re on this topic, it might be a good idea to put your smartphone on silent when you’re trying to get some shut-eye.
Stick to A Schedule
One of the perils of life on the road is that your sleep schedule goes out the window. Don’t idly resign yourself to this fact, however. As much as you can, sticking to a regular sleeping schedule when you’re on your route can do wonders for how many total hours you get. Think of your life when you’re at home. Would you normally be sleeping at this time? If so, you should try to get some well-deserved rest as soon as you can.
