Staying healthy is tough for everyone, whether they are working in a cubicle or driving on the highway. Staying healthy is particularly difficult for truckers, who eat at odd hours and are often stuck eating whatever they can find on the road. However, a little bit of preparation can go a long way when it comes to staying healthy while on a truck drive. Here are some of our favorite healthy snack ideas for truckers.
Veggies
Vegetables are a great snack, because they are low in calories and high in nutrients. Basic crudite vegetables like celery, carrot sticks, zucchini, cucumbers, broccoli, and cherry tomatoes, are all easy to take on the road. If you don’t like the taste of raw vegetables on their own, bring a couple of tablespoons of hummus, low-fat dressing, or peanut butter along with you.
Fruit
I bet you could guess that fruit was going to be the next snack suggestion on the list! Chopped up fruit is an excellent snack. You can purchase fruit cups without sugary syrup if you want a shelf-stable type of fruit. Otherwise, you can cut up apples, pears, strawberries, or oranges to bring along with you. Fruit and vegetables are also great snacks because they are high in water content, so they hydrate you as well.
Nuts & Seeds
When it comes to nuts and seeds, which are both high in fat, you should choose small portions to take along with you. Select a handful of your favorite nuts, like Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, or hazelnuts. Make sure that the nuts you choose are roasted and unsalted, to avoid high levels of sodium in what you’re consuming.
Hard Boiled Eggs
Purchase eggs and hard boil them to take with you on the road. Eggs are packed with good nutrients including low amounts of fat, high protein, and vitamins. They are easy to peel and eat at rest stops or as an afternoon snack. If you do choose to bring along hard boiled eggs or another refrigerated snack like cheese, you should also bring a cooler along with you.
