It’s always a good idea to have healthy habits on the road, but hygiene has become a concern now more than ever. Being a trucker is a risky but rewarding job, and all of the travel involved means that you could more often run into less-than sanitary conditions. But there’s no need to worry when you are prepared. Here are some tips for hygienes practice to keep you safe and healthy on the road.
Keeping it Clean
Although it’s an obvious first step, washing your hands is the key to protect yourself and others from the spread of germs. Hand sanitizer is portable and effective. But even if you can’t get a hold of hand sanitizer, there’s nothing wrong with bringing some antibacterial soap and a designated water bottle for washing your hands outside when you can’t get to a sink. The recommended length of time for handwashing is at least 20 seconds, not including rinsing. That’s long enough to make sure that you rub soap on the palms and backs of your hands and between your fingers.
Personal Awareness
Staying healthy and safe on the road is about taking care of yourself. When it comes to hygiene, it helps to remember how to avoid illness. In general, you should avoid touching your face, for example, because that is the easiest way to get sick. In addition to having good hygiene habits, you can also keep your immune system strong through other healthy habits like a balanced diet and getting enough rest.
Take a Break
People have been talking a lot about social distancing lately. Depending on your policies at work, this might not necessarily be a problem if you spend most of your time alone in your truck anyway. However, it’s always good to remember in order to protect others. Keep in mind the places you might go to, such as rest stops, that might have higher amounts of people. But remember, if you don’t feel comfortable trying to work around social distancing, then it might be a better idea to consider taking some time off instead.
