Truck drivers are some of the hardest working people we know. Why is it important for carriers, brokers, and shippers to show respect to them? Truck drivers make our modern economy possible! Here are 5 ways to show truck drivers the respect they deserve.
Respect their Time
In a survey of truck drivers, 63% reported that it takes them, on average, more than 3 hours to get loaded or unloaded. That’s an incredible waste of time! Drivers may not be able to get home to their families and end up sleeping in the cab if they’re being held up at a loading dock or stuck in traffic. Drivers carefully manage their time and breaks so they don’t miss a load, so making sure they get back on the road as quickly as possible is ideal.
Fair Pay
Regulations are often cited as the worst aspect of being a truck driver. Since they bear much of the burden of those regulations, making sure they are paid fairly ought to be a priority. And, because there is a shortage of new drivers entering the field, fair pay should be able to remedy this skills shortage.
Being Honest
Giving a driver all of the information they need about the load will show them that you appreciate the job they do.
Giving Drivers Time at Home
Many truck drivers entered the field because they enjoy the open road, but ask them if they’d like to live there and most would probably prefer time at home! Learn your drivers’ preferences to see who likes short runs and who prefers longer runs. Then try to schedule them according to their preferences.
Access to Facilities
Drivers have probably spent a few hours behind the wheel before they pull up to the dock. Let them have access to your facilities. A couch, cup of coffee, or even simple access to the bathroom is a great way to show your appreciation for the driver who just safely delivered your freight!
