If you’re a truck driver, you’ll need to navigate through all sorts of different weather conditions throughout the year. Some weather conditions are more favorable than others, and one of the more troublesome ones to encounter is fog. Knowing how to safely drive through fog is imperative for the safety of drivers around you, as well as yourself. This also means knowing what to refrain from doing so that you don’t put people in danger. Here is what you’ll want to avoid doing when truck driving in foggy weather.
Don’t Use Your High Beams
While high beams can improve visibility on clear nights, they have the opposite effect in foggy weather. When you shine intense light into foggy weather, a glare is caused as a result of the fog, which actually worsens your ability to see what’s in front of you. That’s why you’ll want to stick to low beams when truck driving in the fog. This way, you keep your own visibility higher, while also making it easier for other drivers to see where you are.
Don’t Stop on the Road
If you can avoid stopping on the road, then that’s what we advise. It’s harder for people to see you when the weather is foggy, and you want to minimize the likelihood of a collision occurring on the road.
If you must make a stop, you should pull over to an area that’s safely away from the rest of traffic. This way, people won’t have to be wary of you while they’re driving.
Don’t Change Lanes Spontaneously
Sudden lane changes are never safe, even when weather conditions are clear. In the fog, it becomes even more dangerous due to the decreased visibility that foggy weather conditions bring. As such, make sure you use your turn signals when changing lanes, and switch into each lane one at a time.
