What Happens When You Don’t Change Your Transmission Fluid?

When you don’t change your truck’s transmission fluid, there are some problems that can arise.

If you’re a truck driver, you depend on your truck every day to get you to the various destinations that you have. One part of keeping your truck functional and reliable is making sure that the transmission fluid is changed. When you don’t change your truck’s transmission fluid, there are some problems that can arise.

What Happens When You Aren’t Changing Your Automatic Transmission Fluid?

Of all of the fluids your truck has, the automatic transmission fluid works harder than practically all others. It contributes to your vehicle’s hydraulic pressure, letting you shift gears. On top of that, it offers lubrication while cleaning the internal moving mechanisms of your truck. Your transmission’s internal temperature is also regulated in large part due to your automatic transmission fluid.

When you don’t replace it, its cleaning and lubricating properties will cease. As such, sludge will build up, your truck’s components will experience more friction, and your vehicle’s internal temperature will rise. This makes it harder to switch gears, and your other internal components could fail entirely.

What Happens When You Aren’t Changing Your Manual Transmission Fluid?

Contrary to automatic fluid, manual fluid has no hydraulic properties to it. The purpose that manual transmission fluid serves is to clean and lubricate the internal transmission pieces of your truck.

Similarly to many oils, manual fluid will break down as time passes. Not only that, but metal shavings and outside debris can also contaminate it.

When you don’t change your truck’s manual fluid, the fluid will lose its viscosity. This means that your transmission’s components won’t get the lubrication that they need. As such, just like with automatic transmission fluid, it’ll be harder to shift gears. Not only that, but there will also be more stress on your truck’s transmission, which could cause early failure.
