Weather Conditions That Make Roads More Hazardous

Some weather conditions, unfortunately, can make roads more dangerous.

The weather outside is constantly changing. Some days, the weather will be calm and pleasant, while other days will present conditions that make being outside less safe. When it comes to truck driving, you want to have the most ideal weather conditions possible for the sake of maximizing safety. Some weather conditions, unfortunately, can make roads more dangerous.

Rain

Rain is a fairly common type of weather condition to encounter. While the amount of rain you can get, as well as its intensity, can vary, all types of rain can be dangerous for people on the road.

Roads will be more slippery whenever there’s rainfall. The first few minutes are especially dangerous because the water will combine with any debris and oil that’s on the road. This creates an especially slippery surface commonly referred to as the “first flush”. It puts drivers at increased risk of hydroplaning while driving.

Fog

Fog doesn’t do its damage on the road, but rather, it raises the chances of collisions on the road due to decreased visibility. The denser the fog, the harder it will be to see in front of you while you’re driving. That’s why it’s important to use your headlight whenever you’re driving around in foggy weather conditions. Just avoid using your high beams because these can cause glare, which will actually make it even harder for drivers to see.

High Winds

High winds aren’t as commonly seen as a road hazard, but there are still dangers that come with strong-enough winds, mainly with larger vehicles like trucks. When winds are strong, your vehicle’s stability can become compromised, making it more difficult for drivers to keep control while they’re on the road. There’s also the risk of crosswinds, which can cause lane deviations, further raising the likelihood of accidents occurring.
