Truck drivers always need to be careful when they’re out on the road. This is especially true when you’re facing unideal weather conditions. One weather condition that can prove dangerous is fog, as it can hinder your vision and make it tougher to react to everything around you. That’s why, today, we’ll be going over ways you can stay safe when truck driving in foggy weather.
Lower Your Speed
Since fog obstructs your vision, it will take more time for you to react to the obstacles that exist on the road. To help offset this issue, you should lower the speed at which you’re driving. While fog can make you take longer to react, driving more slowly will grant you additional reaction time. This helps to lower your chances of a collision.
Don’t Use Your High Beams
When truck driving in foggy weather, it might sound reasonable to use your high beams. After all, these lights are meant to improve visibility. With that said, you should refrain from using them when there’s fog. This is because the tiny water droplets that fog makes could reflect light back into your eyes, which can temporarily blind you. For this reason, you’ll want to stick to your low beams instead.
Keep Your Distance From Other Drivers
Tailgating is already a dangerous thing for truck drivers (or any drivers) to do. It only gets worse when tailgating in foggy weather. As we mentioned earlier, it can be harder to react to obstacles in the road when there’s fog. By driving in close proximity to other drivers, you don’t give yourself a lot of time to react to what other drivers do, making a collision more likely. That’s why, when truck driving in the fog, you should keep a safe distance from other drivers on the road. Generally, giving yourself three seconds of reaction time should be sufficient, but allowing yourself additional time doesn’t hurt.
