It’s a tough dilemma—you are driving down the highway and struggling with the traffic yourself, you witness a traffic accident while you are driving, and you aren’t sure if you should pull over and offer to help or if it’s minor enough that you can keep driving. Here are some tips on what to do if you witness a traffic accident during one of your hauls.
Call 911
Even if the accident looks minor and even if you weren’t able to pull over, call 911 and give whatever information you have available. Remain calm when talking to the operator and answer all questions that you can, including the approximate location on the highway, what type of emergency response the accident needs, and what the scene of the accident looked like. Make sure that you give your name and contact information so that they can call back if they need more information.
Leave Some Room
When you pull over to help during an accident, make sure that you leave space around the vehicles involved in the accident for emergency vehicles and first responders to park and access the victims easily. Even if it is tempting, do not park your truck in a way that blocks the vehicles, as that places it at a high risk of being hit and causing another accident.
First Aid 101
When you get out of your truck to help at the scene of a traffic accident, you should answer the following questions to yourself (and give the information to the 911 operator if you can):
- Is there a fire at the accident scene?
- Are there any visible loose wires?
- Is there gas that you can smell?
- Is there any broken glass around the accident or the victims?
- Are there drugs or alcohol visible at the scene?
- Is the situation potentially hostile or violent?
