Driving takes a lot of focus, and it can become difficult to focus under certain conditions. Sometimes, the reason for losing focus has to do with how long you’ve been driving. Extended hours of driving without a break can become tiring after a while, which is a sign that it’s best to pull over until you feel ready to drive again. Another factor that impacts focus is driving during the late hours of the night. Night driving can be very tiring at times, but there are tips you can use that will help you stay awake and alert during these times.
Do Some Exercise Before You Begin Night Driving
Exercise is a great activity in general, and it’s especially helpful if you’re about to do some night driving. This is because exercise gets your heart rate up and increases the blood flow that you get to your brain. These factors help keep you from getting drowsy while driving.
Consider Caffeinated Beverages
A caffeinated drink, such as either an energy drink or coffee, can be a quick and easy solution to give you a boost in energy and alertness. This is something we don’t recommend for especially long drives, however. The reason for this is because you might end up having a caffeine crash once the boost in energy wears off. Typically, you can expect this crash to occur in no more than 5 hours.
Bring Healthy Snacks With You
Along with drinks, snacks can also give you a little boost in energy when you’re driving around at night. Be careful about which snacks you choose, though, as some are better for you than others. Try to avoid salty packaged snacks and fast food when you can, as these can make you drowsy after a while or result in a sugar crash, depending on what you get. Instead, opt for high-energy options, such as trail mix, that will help you stay awake for the long haul.
