Dangers of Night Driving, and What to Do About Them

Night driving presents quite a few risks, and we want to help you prepare for them.

We’re getting closer to the end of summer, which also means daylight savings time will be finishing up soon. This means there will likely be more hours in the day when you’re driving in the dark. Night driving presents quite a few risks, and we want to help you prepare for them.

Less Visibility

When you’re night driving, there won’t be as much light to help you navigate roadways. Less visibility means there’s an increased chance of getting into a crash. That’s why you want to check your headlights before you get on the road. Headlights will significantly raise the visibility you have while you’re driving at night, which in turn will increase your safety when you’re behind the wheel.

Driving While Tired

When we get later into the day, we start to get more tired and fatigued. It’s vital to stay alert when you’re driving so that you can respond properly to your surroundings. If you think that you’re too tired to drive safely, you should pull over and give yourself a break until you feel refreshed enough to get behind the wheel again. If there’s another driver in the vehicle with you, you could have them take over while you rest as well.

Beware of Glare From Strong Headlights

While we just said earlier that a lack of light can be a danger while night driving, it’s also possible for too much light to be a danger as well. This is because drivers use their headlights at night, and you might come across drivers who use their high beams while you’re driving.

High beams aren’t supposed to be used when you’re facing oncoming traffic, but you might still run into drivers who forget to turn them off. These high beams can seriously harm your concentration, so it’s best to avoid looking directly at them when you’re driving.
