What Truck Drivers Should and Should Not Do During a Tornado Alert
June 28th, 2024Tornados are highly dangerous, and they can impact places all around the world. Tornados can be especially dangerous for truck drivers because they have to be on the road throughout the day, increasing the likelihood of being caught in a storm. If you’re a truck driver, you need to keep yourself as safe as possible while you’re driving, especially when the weather gets nasty. That’s why, today, we’ll give truck drivers suggestions for what to do during a tornado alert, and what not to do as well.
Do Find Shelter in a Strong Building, When Possible
If you see a tornado alert in your area, it’s important to seek shelter. Make sure that the place where you seek protection is actually sturdy enough to withstand the force of a tornado. Typically, locations like restaurants, convenience shops, and truck stops will provide sufficient protection in these situations. If you’re able to find somewhere like this, keep away from windows and doors.
Don’t Seek Shelter in Tunnels or Overpasses
While tunnels and overpasses do put a roof over your head, you’re not protected on all sides. In fact, because of their shape, tunnels and overpasses actually intensify the strength of wind. This tends to result in a lot of flying debris that can strike your truck. Depending on the strength of the tornado, your truck could even be pulled out, towards the vortex.
Do Find a Ditch When You Can’t Find Shelter
If you’re not able to find shelter in a building, try to find a ditch where you can bunker down. The goal is to get as low to the ground as possible. You also want to stay far away from your truck because tornados have the strength to lift trucks into the air. It’s highly dangerous to be in the vicinity of an airborne truck.
Ideally, you’ll want something to wrap around your body because the strong winds can actually take a toll on you. You should also note whether or not water is accumulating in the ditch you chose, or if there are power lines nearby. These factors can affect whether or not the place you chose is the safest option.
