Daimler introduces the medium-duty engine to the American market!
Three years ago, Daimler introduced the 5-liter DD5 and 8-liter DD8 medium-duty diesel engines to the European market. Two weeks ago, Daimler Trucks of North America announced that their Detroit Powertrain plant will begin manufacturing medium-duty diesel engines for the American market. Starting next year, proprietary diesels will be available in the Freightliner M2, with the first engines being manufactured in Daimler’s Mannheim, Germany plant. Full U.S. production is slated for the end of 2018, at which point Daimler’s medium-duty engines will be available in DTNA’s Western Star, Freightliner, Custom Chassis and Thomas Built Bus brands. This marks a shift from the current Cummins medium-duty engines. However, according to Martin Daum, president and CEO of DTNA, Cummins engines will still be an available option on the market.
This change is great for the American engine manufacturing economy; by introducing medium-diesel engines to the Detroit plant, DTNA is showing a $375 million investment in the Detroit manufacturing site and is creating 160 new American jobs. This isn’t the first time DTNA has invested in American resources. The company has also invested $100 million and created 170 new jobs by adding its DT12 heavy-duty automated transmission (AMT) to its Detroit Powertrain plant. Werner Bernhard, head of the Daimler Trucks and Bus business, said in a statement that he is excited to be increasing production at the Detroit Powertrain plant of the DT12 AMT and the DD5 and DD8 medium-duty diesel engines. “The success of our integrated powertrain for heavy-duty vehicles in the US is phenomenal,” Werner Bernhard stated. “This is a major step in executing our global platform strategy.”
